Recent news of research and discoveries in the field of mental and physical health in high-tech companies have shown the disadvantages of open-plan offices for IT developer and programmer staff, the advantages of good health insurance plans including well-being programmes, in high tech companies, and the benefits of working on professional premises instead of at home.

Open floor and computer developers

Developers and programmers apparently have their own special hatred of open floor plans, says  Michelle Quinn, “In Silicon Valley, some workers hanker for an office door of their own” (The Mercury News, October 24). They “don’t want to overhear conversations. That’s ideal for a trading floor, but developers need to concentrate,” she quotes Joel Spolsky, chief executive of Stack Overflow, on 5 October at the GeekWire Summit in Seattle.  Quinn reports that on the Reddit website, programmers yearn for the old days of offices with doors. “If you want to attract and keep developers, don’t emphasize ping-pong tables, lounges, fire pits and chocolate fountains,” wrote one worker. “Give them private offices or let them work from home, because uninterrupted time to concentrate is the most important and scarcest commodity.”

High-tech companies and health and wellness

Hang Nguyen of San Diego Union-Tribune writes on November 14 about health and wellness plans and programmes in the Californian high-tech city. Quoting Kim Perell,  president of digital marketing technology company Amobee : “we believe great people make great companies”. Health and wellness programs have “proven to yield higher levels of productivity, job satisfaction and retention rates.” A Harvard study in 2010 found that medical costs fall by $3.27 for every dollar spent on wellness programs and absenteeism costs drop by $2.73 for every dollar spent.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) also recently reported on evidence in Californian high-tech companies, of the benefits of employees working at company premises rather than from home. Mashable, in an article entitled “13 Hot Startups With Inspired Office Design” by Lauren Drell on June 24, looks at a host of different company office designs with lavish illustrations of each.

Europages, the pan-European business web directory and on-line business-to-business sales platform has a section devoted to business furniture.
